Sources of guidance for practical activities

Fire Extinguisher
The following sources provide model (general) risk assessments. London Schools have access to CLEAPSS advice. All London Boroughs are members of CLEAPSS.

Please note that we are still working on this page and taking advice about its content.

Model (general) risk assessments for practical activities are available in the following sources:

  • CLEAPSS Hazcards (see annually updated CLEAPSS Science publications CD-ROM)
  • CLEAPSS Laboratory handbook (see annually updated CD-ROM)
  • CLEAPSS Recipe cards (see annually updated CD-ROM)
  • ASE Safeguards in the school laboratory 11th edition 2006
  • ASE Topics in Safety 3rd edition, 2001
  • ASE Safety reprints, 2006 or later.

Only you can know when your school or college needs a special risk assessment for an activity not covered by the above sources. But thereafter, the responsibility for taking all the steps demanded by the regulations lies with your employer.
